Anafiotika “Village”

Which Greek island and village does this photo remind you of with the castle on the top?

Well, don’t be in a hurry to answer, cause you might make a mistake with the island or the “village”!

In fact, you will definetely make a mistake with this “village” cause you will not find it on any Greek island as it is right under the…Acropolis of Athens!!!

Yes! You heard it right and it has changed very little since the middle of the 19th Century (1832) when the Palace (now the Parliament house) was being built for the (appointed by a British/French/Russian alliance) young Bavarian Prince Othon as King of (the newly liberated by the Othoman Empire) Greece and workers from the island of Anafi (south-east of  Santorini) were brought over to work on it, and that plot of land at the North-Eastern part under the Acropolis of Athens was given to them to house themselves.

The years past, Athens changed a lot, but, thanks to some laws, Anafiotika and most parts of the Plaka district next to it, remained exactly as back in the 19th Century, for all of us to enjoy and cherish.

So, when you visit Plaka (a must-do when in Athens) remember to stroll around Anafiotika “village” and enjoy a coffee or a drink in one of the very simple little coffee-shops in the area (you would fill like it, cause its all uphill) and then head either towards the Agora, Hephaistos Temple and Attalus Museum or the other way round towards the Acropolis Museum.
