Nafplion – All year round

One of the most beautiful towns of Greece in the area of eastern Peloponnese, full of history and romance with Ancient castles and Medieval architecture, first capital of liberated Greece between 1823 and 1834, is Nafplion.

According to mythology, the town was founded by Nafplios, the son of God of the sea Poseidon and Danaida the daughter of Danaus. The town’s history traces back to the prehistoric era when Nafplians participated at the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War alike.

The town declined during the Roman times and flourished again during the rein of Byzantium. Frank, Venetian and Turkish conquerors left their mark in the town and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions during the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings with their unique architecture and beauty, make the visitor feel like the time hasn’t past.

Some of these beautiful old buildings are now being converted into very tasteful pensions, hotels and furnished apartments and along with some old taverns and coffee shops with delicious local food and sweets plus a 2 hour very relaxed and safe journey from Athens, make Nafplion a year-round in-style destination.
