Winter Sunny Holidays in Greece

Athens Happy Sightseeing Train

Many people think of Greece only as a summer holidays land, with long hot days lying under an umbrella on the beach, swimming, snorkling, sherfing, water-skiing, with beautiful sunsets, nice taverna meals with fresh fish and local tasty food ascorted with ouzo and wine and clubing until the early hours of the next day, but…Winter is also an excellent time to visit Greece.

Greece is a land of contrasts, that combines 13,676 kilometers (8,498 miles) of coastline, the largest in the Mediterranean Basin with sun-drenched sandy beaches to soaring mountains with snow that doesn’t melt until the middle of spring.

Archaeological sites stretch back thousands of years and contrast with the busy life of the bigger cities and the all-holiday beautiful resorts on the islands and the mainland.

The weather can be surprisingly mild, especially in the south with plenty of sunshine and temperatures that can reach up to 20C (68F), until the end of December (2023 was exactly as such) but, in January and February you do need to be prepared for rainy days, lower temperatures,  that can sometimes go as low as 0 to -5. (Yeah, for those of you coming from the North this is still spring-time weather)

One of the advantages of visiting Greece in the winter is the lack of bulk tourism. Cities like Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos and Patra are still busy with locals and a few visitors, but you will find that there are fewer people at the archaeological sites and museums, the guides and curators have more time to spend with you and explain about the exhibits and the history of Greece and that at restaurants and shops you are given far more attention and better services.

Although not all of the islands are open for winter tourism, especially the smaller ones that don’t have an airport or frequent ferry schedules (for the adventurus ones), the bigger islands and all towns and cities on the mainland having an airport are accessible by plane during the winter months from Athens and a few of them from Thessaloniki.

Book your flights, your Stay,  your Transfers upon arrival and departure, your tickets to Museums for your next trip to Greece and use our Travel Request Form for a special event, tour, or activity you may have in mind and find out how relaxing or adventurus, but always exciting and memorable your Winter trip to Greece can be !!!
